The mirror rule in Virginia

Yes. Virginia (Va. Code § 46.2-1082; 19VAC30-70-220) requires two mirrors. With the doors (and their mirrors) off you're down to the interior rearview, so add a driver-side (left) mirror, and ideally both sides, before you drive.

“manufactured after 1968 shall be driven on the highways in the Commonwealth unless equipped with at least one outside and at least one inside rear view mirror”

Put your mirrors back

Your factory side mirrors ride on the doors. These mount to the hinges or the A-pillar so they stay when the doors don't. Every link goes to Amazon.

Fenders and mud flaps

Rear fenders, flaps or guards are required only on vehicles or combinations with a licensed gross weight over 40,000 pounds. (Va. Code § 46.2-1083)

Do you need doors at all?

We didn't find any Virginia statute requiring doors, but we couldn't rule one out from the official code either. The equipment rules (mirrors first) are what usually draw a stop.

Virginia safety inspection regs: 19VAC30-70-220 rejects 1969+ passenger vehicles lacking one outside and one inside mirror (single outside mirror must be driver's side); 19VAC30-70-250 rejects if each door beside the driver's seat lacks a manufacturer-type opening device and latch.
