DOORS-OFF LAWS / 50 STATES + DC

Take it off.
Legally.

No state we checked bans doors-off driving outright. The question is the mirror rule, because a Jeep's side mirrors leave with the doors. Here's every state's rule in one table, each one cited to the statute.

28
Legal with a clear rear view

The statute asks for one mirror with a view behind you, or none unless your rear view is blocked. A clear interior rearview can meet it as written.

16
Legal once you bolt on a side mirror

The statute wants an outside mirror. Yours left with the doors, so bolt one to the hinge or A-pillar. Washington also requires an outside mirror but sits under "fine print" for its door rule, so 17 states want an outside mirror in all.

Why it's a mirror question

On a Wrangler (JK/JL) and a Gladiator (JT), the side mirrors are bolted to the doors. Pull the doors and you're driving with the interior rearview and nothing else. Most state codes were written around one idea: you need a mirror that shows you the road behind, usually 200 feet of it. Where that's the whole rule, a clear interior mirror can meet it as written. Where the code calls for an outside mirror, you need to put one back.

Either way, the fix costs less than the ticket: hinge or A-pillar mirrors that stay on when the doors come off. Gear in the cargo area, a fogged-up soft-top window or a trailer can block your interior view, and every state then expects outside mirrors.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Doors-off law FAQ.

Is it legal to drive a Jeep with the doors off?
We didn't find a state that bans driving with factory-removable doors off outright. A few have door rules worth knowing: Pennsylvania's and Hawaii's safety inspections want the doors on, Washington requires doors to be kept in working order, and New Hampshire and Wisconsin specifically exempt doors built to come off. Otherwise the law cares about equipment, and the piece that matters most for a Wrangler or Gladiator is the side mirror, because the factory mirrors are bolted to the doors.
Do you need side mirrors to drive a Jeep with the doors off?
Depends on the state. In 29 jurisdictions the mirror law asks only for a mirror with a view of the road behind (typically 200 feet), or for none unless your rear view is blocked, which a clear interior rearview can meet. In 17 it calls for an outside mirror, usually on the driver's side. The table above shows which is which, with the statute linked.
Does doors-off change anything besides mirrors?
Rarely. Fender and mud-flap rules care about your tires and flares, not your doors, and lighting rules don't change when the doors come off. If you've lifted the Jeep and run wide tires, check your state's fender rule in the table.

How we built this: for each state we read the rear-view mirror and fender statutes in the official code (or a published copy of it) and summarized what the text says, last checked October 8, 2026. A rule we couldn't confirm is marked that way, with a link to the state's motor vehicle agency. We're Jeep people, not lawyers, and this isn't legal advice. Trails, beaches, parks and cities can add their own rules. Spot an error? Tell us.
